Fans who watched A & A Millwork and the Errol Carlstrom Playaz Tuesday night in the Howard Pulley Pro City Summer League got two games for the price of one.
Both teams held their own in the first 20 minutes, going back-and-forth with the Playaz holding a 52-48 lead at halftime.
Then the emergency exit doors closed in the St. Paul Salvation Army gym after being open most of the evening to compensate for air conditioning problems.
Not only did that stop the breeze from outside, it sucked the wind out of the Millwork. They were outscored 29-20 in the third quarter and faced a 13-point deficit to start the fourth.
Cue the winds of change.
The Playaz lost Minnesota player Trevor Mbakwe, who fouled out with 5:45 left in the fourth. Around that time, the Millwork got an 8-0 scoring run to bring themselves back in contention.
A Tyrell Sledge basket gave the Millwork their first lead in the second half, only to give up a bucket to tie the game again at 92-92 with 1:13 remaining.
A free throw and a three-pointer was all the Millwork needed to calm the winds inside and beat the Playaz 96-95. Not even a late three-pointer from Gopher Devoe Joseph could stop the Millwork from winning in the battle of undefeated teams.
The Millwork doubled the Playaz score in the final quarter, 28-14.
Former Oklahoma Sooner Johnny Gilbert scored a game-high 21 points in the Millwork's win. Luke Anderson led the Playaz with 20 points while Devoe finished with 17.
The Millwork are now 3-0 on the season and remain tied for the league lead with El-Amin Fish House. The Playaz fall to 2-1 and are now tied with B2X for third place in the standings.
Only one undefeated team will remain after next week, when the Millwork take on the Fish House next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Salvation Army gym. The Playaz take the floor with a bye team in the following game, scheduled to start at 8:45 p.m.
