A quick glance at the brackets shows some familiarity to the Minnesota basketball community fan base.
First - Sending Nebraska to Minnesota shows the respect that the NCAA has for the women's basketball fan base and loyalty by placing 1 of the 4 #1 seeds here. The Huskers come in having their 30 game win streak snapped in the Big 12 tournament. Make no mistake that the Red and White will take over the home of the Maroon & Gold but local fans will see the closest thing available to UConn's undefeated record that week. Not only have the fans continued to fill the stands for the Golden Gophers and past NCAA events, but for the overall sport itself. Concordia College, St. Thomas, and several High Schools regularly pack the stands for games and this weekends State Tournament is likely to be no exception.
On the Husker roster fans should look for #20 Katya Leick from Park High School (2009) and #40 Cory Montgomery of Cannon Falls (2006)
Second - University of Northern Iowa has a roster full of local former Iowa High School players. Why is this good for Minnesota fans? The Panthers could be a program that gets into the NCAA's over the next few years and being so close to the Twin Cities, if the fans adopt a Panther player or 2 watch out.
Third - North Carolina State University gained many fans and followers when they visited her for the 2008 Subway Classic during Coach Yow's final season. With more then 6 players still on the roster, the Wolfpack players will have some local interest and could end up as the overall crowd favorite to cheer for.
Fourth - UCLA has no one on staff or on the roster remaining from their last visit here during NCAA's of March 21, 2004 but their fans all enjoyed it the last time here - except for the small detail of losing to the Gophers. How ironic is it that the Bruins return to the NCAA's at a Big Ten School after their last 2 Tournament runs were ended by Big Ten teams (Minnesota 2004 & Purdue 2006)
